Finally, and thank God, COVID is going down, Not o Finally, and thank God, COVID is going down, Not only in the United States, but all over the world. The question, is why.⠀Dr Paul Sax MD, Harvard Doctor of Infectious Diseases, gives some answers. Perhaps my favorite of the whole article, he leads off by saying “I don’t know.”⠀His explanations include the COVID maybe seasonal like the flu, common cold; Maybe enough of us have gotten COVID and herd immunity is developing, Our behavior of masking and social distancing contributes to the decline, The vaccine may be driving numbers down, although we hear about more Deadly COVID mutants, it’s also possible that overtime the virus has become weaker. Or maybe it’s a combination of all of the above.⠀If you’re looking for a good discussion for why COVID is going down, this one is a great place to start, from a legitimate expert.⠀Source: @nejm @nejm.catalyst - NEJM Journal Watch Blogs 💡
Your health matters, and a day will come when it w Your health matters, and a day will come when it will determine not only how quickly you recover, but IF you recover at all. Yes, this is intense and scary. And it's real, that's the point. How I wish I could have this conversation with too many of many patients 20 years before I saw them sick and dying in the ER. I don't want this to be you--YOU have to do something about this, mi amigo.Covid continues to teach us this, that whatever state our health is in when serious illness strikes--determines our fate. Intense, I know. I watch this play out every. single. fucking. day. at work. Some are in great shape, rarely get sick, and when they do, bounce back the quickest. From the flu, from Covid, from surgery, from accidents. From cancer. These guys give themselves the best shot.Others, sadly, are in terrible condition when the big one strikes. It was a conversation with a friend who was sick (but surviving and will be fine) with Covid, suffering with the headaches, fatigue and body aches that are just miserable and lasting over a week in her case. She admitted she had not been taking care of herself, could be in better shape (minus 20 pounds), eating and moving better, resting, etc. In this case, if she were in better shape, I think she likely would have recovered more quickly from Covid, and suffered less. Chances are, her state of health, MATTERED.Specifically, I'm talking about getting the basics in good shape first, like your blood pressure, blood sugar and weight. And the lifestyle that underlies them--nutrition and movement, sleep and rest, the mental headspace, smoking, drugs and alcohol. The stuff I think we all know, but do we practice...We will never give up on you, whether you show up half dead at my ER ambulance bay, we will fight for your life the whole way, and save it every time we can. AND we will fight for your life NOW, when you are resting safely, comfortably now, and you need a kick in the ass to get off the Netflix couch. But either way--we want you to fight for yourself LONG BEFORE WE HAVE TO FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE. Get in better shape, take care of yourself and do it NOW, because one day...
In medicine, a dietitian (Registered Dietitian) is In medicine, a dietitian (Registered Dietitian) is the professional with the education, training and experience working with the details around nutrition. When a doctor friend of mine (a dermatologist) asked me who to follow on instagram for weight loss, I asked her, "Would you send your skin patients to the internet or Instagram?" Of course not! It's a jungle, most of the time with incomplete advice not appropriately tailored or personalized to the person and their specific situation. It is far less effective (I don't want to say waste of your time, but you can definitely backtrack) than going to the designated medical professional, whether it's a dermatologist for your skin, or a dietician for your plate.Imagine sitting down (even virtually) with a dietician for 4-6 visits over a period of months just once in your life. It takes time to build good eating habits and incorporate the foods you love, while learning how to prepare healthy foods that don't taste like shit. That real commitment and investment can last a lifetime, and even positively impact your generations that follow you. This is far superior to the google searching and the bits and pieces of content from the gram, which can be helpful and supportive, but should always be SECONDARY to working with a real professional. That's if you're serious. You cannot simply hack your way to lifelong healthy eating habits. That's bullshit. As a doctor, I can see from across the ER who eats like shit, and who takes care of themselves in the kitchen. When my patients are open to it, I love talking about the lifestyle habits that can enrich and lengthen their lives. In the ER, I kind of view my role as the sales pitch--here's what eating better can do for you, this is what it might start to look like. Now I'm going to hand you off to the best professional who can help you nail down the details of how that might work for you.How to lose weight? And eat better?1. Go to a dietician.2. The end.**Now I am aware that these days, there are more than just dietitians (coaches, other medical professionals) with years of education, training and proved experience working with folks and forks. I'm fine
