The Easy Things You Can Do Every Day to Find Happiness

Health and wellness coach Caroline Jordan works with a lot of highly intelligent clients. But, when she asks them, “What do you want?” they have no idea.
For many of us, happiness is something we’ll achieve once we reach that next work goal or life milestone. But happiness isn’t something saved for the future; it’s your state of being right now. And, if you’re not feeling happy at this point in your life, it’s time to make a change.
But knowing what you want isn’t a simple question to answer. Instead, Caroline suggests you ask yourself what you don’t want to narrow down your goals for life.
The only person responsible for your happiness is you. So, to make happiness an everyday feeling, not just something that lies on the other side of a goal, there are a couple of things you should try.
Find out What’s Important to You
By deciding what you don’t want in your life, you can eliminate those negatives — and focus more on finding the things that do make you happy. Whether that’s switching up your work schedule like Caroline did, spending more time caring for yourself or simply prioritizing your sleep, getting rid of those damaging aspects of your life will instantly improve your mood.
However, more important is finding out what you really want in life. To find out what will make you happy, Caroline suggests you ask yourself these questions:
- What am I good at? What are my strengths?
- How can I use those to help the world?
- What do I value about my life?
These may be tough questions, but finding and sustaining happiness isn’t a quick fix. It’s all about finding out more about yourself and what living a meaningful life means to you. If you can answer these questions, you can take the first steps to incorporating these strengths and values into your everyday life.
Make a Vision Board
But, what if you’re having trouble answering these questions? You can make a vision board, which is a tangible and physical representation of what you want your life to look like.
To start, take a piece of poster board and your favorite magazines. Cut out the images and phrases you admire and want your life to look like, whether those are photos of models, food you’d like to eat or colors you want to represent your life. You can make these online, too.
Whatever method you choose, your vision board should be a constant reminder of your life goals — one that you see every day in your home. This way, you can check in with yourself every day to see if you’re happy, in the moment, using your gifts and honoring your strengths in ways that will make you happy.
It’s not something that happens overnight, and your life goals may change over time, but the most important part is to just get started.
