[dropcap]P[/dropcap]aleo. Gluten-free. Atkins. South Beach. There are so many experts out there recommending so many different diets as “the best” way to lose weight. So how do you know which one will really help you reach your weight loss goals?

Here, learn about the three main categories of diets, and discover the secret for choosing the one that is right for you.

Understanding the Three Types of Diets

While there are a lot of different diets out there, most of them can basically be classified in one of three ways: low-carb, low-fat or balanced. For example, Paleo, Atkins and South Beach would all be considered low-carb diets, while Volumetrics is a low-fat diet and Weight Watchers promotes a balanced, low-calorie diet.

This means that when it comes to your diet, you can either keep it balanced and reduce calories, or decrease one particular macronutrient — fat or carbohydrates.

Choosing a Low-Carb or Low-Fat Diet

Medical studies have shown that people can lose weight and keep it off with low-carb, low-fat or balanced, low-calorie diets — and there is little difference, if any, between them in terms of long-term follow-up.

“One of the biggest keys to lifestyle change is doing what works for you, and if you can’t imagine doing it for two years, then it’s not a realistic long-term solution for you. For example, if you love carbs and cannot imagine going without them for two years, then don’t pick a low-carb diet.”

According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “significant weight loss was observed with any low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet. Weight loss differences between individual named diets were small. This supports the practice of recommending any diet that a patient will adhere to in order to lose weight.”

In simpler terms, this means that the most important factor to consider when choosing a diet is this: the diet you can stick to is the best diet for you. While a low-carb diet may be very successful for weight loss, it only works if you can stick to it for the long haul. If you love your bread and grains, it may not be the best diet to help you lose weight.

Maintaining a healthy weight is a lifelong process. Instead of spending your money on the latest fad diet, focus on developing healthy habits that you can maintain over time. Stick to the basic principles of nutrition, experiment, and figure out what works for you.

“Think of a long-term, two-year goal not only to give yourself a realistic time to get what you want, but to get the advantages of the mentality that comes with a long-term outlook.”
