[dropcap]B[/dropcap]urnout: we’ve all felt it at one point or another, and it can leave a serious impact on your mood and your health.
But if you think burnout is just an inevitable part of life, think again. By taking the right steps, you can make sure you’re happy and healthy enough to ward off the burnout blues.
I recently spoke to health and wellness coach Caroline Jordan about this topic. Because her job requires her to be continually teaching and giving her all to her students, she’s had more cases of burnout than she would care to admit.[/cs_text][x_video_player type=”16:9″ src=”https://youtu.be/MqqIZF1AYz8″ hide_controls=”false” autoplay=”false” no_container=”false” preload=”none” advanced_controls=”false” muted=”false” loop=”false” poster=””][cs_text]If you, like Caroline, feel extremely fulfilled in your job, it can be easy to let that consume your life. You might love what you do and give it your all every single day but, without a variety of interests and goals in your life, you will quickly reach a point of burnout.
Luckily, Caroline has learned just how to keep burnout at bay.
It’s all about balance.
Whether that’s making sure you get enough time with your family and friends or that you’re able to do the things that make you feel fulfilled, balancing the different aspects of your life is the most important way to prevent burnout.
When many people consider health, they focus on exterior things like fitness and diet. But, as Caroline has found out, it’s just as important to focus on your mindset and mood. It doesn’t matter what other people think; you should be focused on living your own life and doing what makes you happy, not what others think you should be doing.
“The happiest people in the world aren’t necessarily the most fit or the most religious with their diet, but they’re connected to themselves and their lives,” Caroline says.
To help avoid burnout, Caroline advises that you ask yourself: What does wellness mean to you? Create a clear vision of what that is, and make sure you schedule in time for recharging and the things that are most important to you (family, friends, creative outlets, etc.)
Do this, and you will have more time and energy to focus on what’s important to you, rather than feeling mentally and physically exhausted each day.
Caroline offered up some easy ways you can keep burnout from getting the best of you:
- Don’t pick up or check your phone before 9 a.m. Give yourself time in the morning to get ready for the day without being overwhelmed by social media, emails and the news cycle.
- Create boundaries with all of your technology. Caroline turns off her phone one hour before she goes to bed to unwind and have a more peaceful sleep. Studies show that the more types of devices used before bed, the more difficulty people have falling asleep and maintaining sleep.
- Be mindful of your thoughts and your emotions throughout the day. Recognize how your body, mind and spirit are feeling and affecting your day, and make the necessary changes to bring you back to a good place.
You can read more about Caroline’s health process in her book “Balanced Body Breakthrough.” You can also follow her on Twitter and Facebook, and check out her fitness videos on her YouTube channel.
